Third-seeded Rafael Nadal was challenged by not-even-close-to-being-seeded Nicolas Kiefer,

 but he responded to win in a Friday second round match under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium that lasted past midnight.
In four previous matches spanning 10 sets, Nadal had never lost a set to Kiefer and after the first set, it certainly didn’t look like that was going to change.

But after Nadal steamrolled through the first set and went up an early break in the second, Kiefer, ranked No. 129 in the world, ripped off four straight games, including two breaks, to take control.
