2009 SHANGHAI MASTERS

FINAL

                 RAFAEL NADAL       v    NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO

7-6 6-4

An inspired Nikolay Davydenko beat top seed and world No 2 Rafael Nadal 7-6, 6-3 to become the Shanghai Masters champion.
The sixth seed Davydenko blasted winners from both sides throughout the two-hour contest,

winning a tight first set in the tiebreak and then getting the only break of the second to secure his fourth title of the year.
Davydenko goes under the radar at nearly every tournament,

but he has finished in the top five in the world for the last four years and beat Nadal in two sets in their last meeting in the final in Miami last year.
A long rally in the first point set the tone for a baseline battle with both players trying to blast the cover off the ball and stretch their opponent off the court.

Crosscourt topspin angled shots are usually Nadal's biggest weapon so it was telling when Davydenko won the point by racing in to knock off a volley.

Davydenko is still fighting to make the field, for the 5th year in a row,  at the year end World Tour Finals, which added to his fierce desire to win this match.
