KIM CLIJSTERS v MARTINA HINGIS
6-3 2-6 6-4

Hingis was having incredible success
after a 3 year hiatus from the sport. She had disposed of lesser players
on the court, but this was going to be a huge test for her to play one of the
best in the world... the hard hitting Kim Clijsters from Belgium.
At the beginning, it looked like the analysts were all correct that Martina
would not be able to compete with the top players in tennis because her lack of
power would not hold up against the younger, more powerful players.
Clijsters was blistering backhands past Hingis and was also destroying Hingis'
soft second serves. But Hingis showed that she can compete by winning the
second set when Clijsters made a string of shots that failed to find the court.
But accuracy returned along with the power of Clijsters, and Hingis' run at her first major event came to a close. She enjoyed every moment of the tournament and was pleased with her results and vowed to keep working on her game to improve.
