2004 Houston Tennis Masters
Roger Federer v Gaston Gaudio
6-1, 7-6 (7-4)

Top-ranked Roger Federer
of Switzerland returned to action after missing three weeks with a torn thigh
muscle and defeated Gaston Gaudio of Argentina 6-1 7-6 in the first round of the
ATP Masters Cup championships in Houston, Texas. Gaudio didn't win another point
in the first set of a match that was interrupted by rain for two hours.
Although Gaudio rallied in the second set, Federer moved well, chasing down drop
shots and retreating to run down overheads. Gaudio, who staged a comeback
to win the French Open final this year, fought back in the second set to force a
tiebreaker. He was down three break points in the ninth game before
managing to hold serve and held again in the 11th game after overcoming three
more break points. But Federer served the final two points of the ensuing
tiebreaker, taking it to match point with a strong volley winner and closing the
match with a forehand winner.
